Occupied Paris, 1941: all members of the Jewish community are instructed to come forward and identify themselves to authorities. Dedicated jeweler Joseph Haffmann, fearing the worst, arranges for his family to flee the city and offers his employee, François Mercier, the chance to move into his home and take over his store until the conflict subsides. When his own attempts to escape are thwarted, Haffmann is forced to seek his assistant’s protection. An agreement is struck, much to the concern of François’s wife, Blanche, which turns into a Faustian bargain that will upend the fates of them all. Starring the great Daniel Auteuil as Mr. Haffmann.
Winner (to date) of 16 Audience Awards at film festivals around the United States.
