Germany, 2018/Drama, 108 minutes/German w/English subtitles/Directed by Nikolaus Leytner/Screenplay by Klaus Richter and Nikolaus Leytner, from the novel by Robert Seethaler  (unrated – contains nudity and sexual situations)

Based on an internationally bestselling novel, The Tobacconist is the coming-of-age story of a 17-year-old innocent, Franz, whom circumstance has brought from the countryside to Vienna shortly before Hitler’s annexation of Austria.  Apprentice to Otto, a tobacconist who sells to Jews, Communists, and anyone else who enters his shop, Franz becomes enamored of regular customer Sigmund Freud, whom he consults (after a fashion) about his infatuation with unattainable goddess (and music hall dancer) Anezka.   As political and social conditions in Austria dramatically worsen with the Nazis’ arrival in Vienna, Franz, Otto, Freud, and Anezka are swept into a maelstrom of events from which each must choose his/her own escape.  In one of his last film roles, Bruno Ganz stars as Freud in this tender, heart-breaking film that was hailed in The Hollywood Reporter for its “unique characters” and “voluptuous filmmaking.”
