Mexico, 2018/Drama, 95 minutes/Spanish w/English subtitles/Directed by Isaac Cherem/Screenplay by Isaac Cherem and Naian González Norvind  (unrated – contains sexual situations)

The pressure to conform is rarely as intimate as in the choice of a life partner, particularly in a close-knit family within a close-knit community.   Ariela, a young Jewish woman in Mexico City, knows this all too well:   in no hurry to marry, she must carefully negotiate her family’s more urgent desires on her behalf, especially when she falls in love with a man guaranteed to meet with their disapproval.    A familiar story in families and cultures from time immemorial, Leona explores the complexities of duty and desire in matters of the heart, in a country that has one of the lowest rates of Jewish assimilation in the world.  With a luminous Naian González Norvind, who also co-wrote the screenplay, in the starring role.

Leona, and the live appearance of director Isaac Cherem, have been generously sponsored by Conrad and Gail Siegel
