Germany/Israel, 2017/drama, 104 minutes/German and Hebrew, w/English subtitles/Written and directed by Ofir Raul Graizer (unrated – contains graphic sexual situations)
The world of Thomas, a young, gay, German baker, is upturned with word that Oren, his married, Israeli lover, has been killed in a car accident in Jerusalem. Seeking answers or closure or perhaps just a way to channel his grief, Thomas travels to Israel, to Jerusalem, to the café run by Anat, his lover’s widow. Unsuspecting, Anat hires Thomas to wash dishes, but before long he is producing exquisite baked goods that fill the café with customers and make him a vital part of the operation – and of Anat’s life. The Cakemaker is a story of love, loss, and unintended consequences along the road to healing and new life.
