USA, 2016/Documentary, 85 minutes/English and Hebrew w/ English subtitles/Written and directed by Dani Menkin

Amid domestic turmoil and the global machinations of the Cold War, a sporting team captures the heart of a nation in On the Map. The film recounts the extraordinary 1977 European Basketball championship, when Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv, a team no one thought could win, crushed the Soviets in the semi-finals before taking on – and beating – the four-time defending champions from Italy. Directed by Dani Menkin (Dolphin Boy, 39 Pounds of Love) who “scored,” writes Simi Horwitz in Film Journal International, in his depiction of this “wonderfully unlikely and little-known story,” On the Map features contemporary interviews with the players who pulled off this feat, as well as with former NBA commissioner David Stern, former US ambassador to Israel Michael Oren, former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky, and NBA legend Bill Walton.

  1. This is one of my favorite films of this year’s festival. The subject is basketball but the idea of the underdog winning is universal. If you come Sunday night, come early!
